Given the fact that Live, when using software based synths in high quality mode (double sample rate and so on) and a plethora of other tools you actively use, is prone to occasionally bugger out and click and pop for even very short, milliseconds, times; then what live performance alternatives are there to prevent this from happening? I can't accept performing and risking any bad sounds getting played back at 90dB or more. Please note I do not

have any massive performance issues in the studio. It's just that when you need to use many audio channels on very short buffer settings (128 samples being maximum) and high quality mode on everything you are taxing your machine to the extremes.I'm working on a live performance rig and I've found these quite obvious points to be part of the potential steps of a solution:
- Use the fastest MacBook Pro) available (I'm currently on Mac exclusively though Apple may change that).
- Travel with a 'Mac' desktop faster than a MBP, like a 6-core or more.
- Move out audio effects you want to use in performance to outboard hardware, either
- Use an analog mixer with dedicated hardware audio effects connected to sends and returns, replacing their respective software equivalents.
- Using UAD for effects or a Waves Soundgrid server connected digitally.
- Like the above but sending audio digitally to another machine dedicated to the task of audio effects.
- Move out (some) software synths to a dedicated machine, like for example Muse Research Receptor (out of production, but being licensed) or just use another normal machine, in both cases likely connected via digital audio.
- Use hardware synths that replaces their software equivalent.
- Use an even faster audio interface, not connected via USB.
- An analogue mixer, 12 to 24 channels and at least 6 effects sends interfacing Live track by track, with acceptable EQ. I seldom go over 20 tracks.
- Analogue synths and drum machines connecting here to the analogue mixer most likely.
- A powerful main machine running Live, handling any mixing tasks better solved in the digital domain, interfacing digitally to;
- A dedicated machine running my Komplete software synths in high quality mode
- A dedicated unit running certain audio effects in high quality mode
- Push 1 for controlling Live

Live.Master or Slave
I'd prefer to use a dedicated MIDI clock and running Live as a slave, but I've had bad experiences not running Live as the master clock. The MIDI running trough this system would be 2 live performers (Me and a MIDI drummer) and possibly others playing synths. Some clips would probably run at some times.
I'd also contemplate using another more stable DAW, but that would of course mean I'd have to migrate everything I need to that and I'd have to learn it too (I know Logic and Reason somewhat).
I'd also contemplate using a hardware sequencer if I thought that would help me here, but that is something I'd reserve for when I choose to not use a computer at all.
